When talking with him he had just finished with Sam Smith's newest video.
Said that now more and more it's the artists who are coming to him to talk about the idea(s) for music videos instead of the record labels, or the managers (in that case it would indicate they have an overcontrolling record manager).
Suede's Night Thoughts is a perfect example of this, with the director saying there's no record label people hanging over his shoulder. That's an example where just like Depeche Mode with Anton Corbijn they trust and let the director carry out his own creative visualisation of the track(s).
