MUSICVID #4: OneRepublic - Counting Stars

POSSIBLE INFLUENCES:

  • The lead singer with his back turned walking away from the camera (narrative enigma), then turning around as the song starts erupting
  • Don't have the performance and narrative connected evidently right from the start, but have them collide in a creative away, but earlier than right at the end
  • The diegetic outro

ACT: OneRepublic
TRACK: Counting Stars
ALBUM: Native
YEAR: 2013
GENRE: Folk pop/rock
DIRECTOR: James Lees
LABEL: Interscope, Mosley
SINGLE?: Yes, second single released after the full album.

BACKGROUND

  • OneRepublic are an American alternative rock band, though they can hardly be called indie as they are owned by Universal Recordings and Sony Music!
  • Their debut single Apologize (video) in 2006 became the biggest radio airplay hit in the history of the Mainstream Top 40 in the USA. This was their first song in seven years to outperform Apologize.
  • The first single before the full album release
  • Formed in 2002, since 2007 they have consisted of lead singer/guitarist/pianist/keyboardist/percussionist Ryan Tedder, backing vocalists and guitarists Zach Filkins (also on viola), Drew Brown (also piano, percussion + keyboard), Brent Kutzle; and last but not least drummer, percussionist and guitarist Eddie Fisher. In 2012 they gained a touring member, Brian Willett, who is not in this video as is expected.

Performance and concept/narrative seem to be spacially divided until the end when they are revealed to be in the same building, and that the energy might have come from the band.

INTRO + OUTRO

The track immediately starts, no silence or other sound used.
The end there is a diegetic outro, but no dialogue, mainly the sound of lights flickering after
falling through the roof.
