POSSIBLE MV INFLUENCES #1 - Extra Sounds

POSSIBLE INFLUENCES

  • I would like to definitely end my video with either a diegetic intro or a few seconds from a different track, but maybe I could have silence at the beginning instead

SILENCES
Silence can be quite effective, as in these videos:

AT THE BEGINNING

Here the characters are doing something that should fake a faint noise, along with the background of a city (stereotype of noisy), lack of expected non-diegetic sound.

....

The first 7-8 secs of this vid, silence, cross-cutting, low-key lighting, very effective

Three seconds here at the end.

...

Silence of 3 secs before the movement starts (Goodwin's 6 categories, edited to music sound)

...

...

Starts with the drum pedal being kicked as the song starts with that beat

...

AT THE END

As the song is over, the camera tracks back from the stage to the audience and even further.

...

As soon as the singer stops talking, he stares as the sound is over for the last 10 seconds and then eventually laughs, breaking the 4th wall.

...

Not so sure if this is effective

This also might be a bit too long

This is very effective with the action of embracing and dancing

A few seconds

IN THE MIDDLE

As the scarf falls down from 01:41 to 01:46.

BOTH BEGINNING + END

Shaky camera shot lasting two seconds before cut to go with start of music. Then long silence at the end as the faces go out of the whole.

....

UPDATE 8th October 2017

To have a long silence while something in the narrative is happening/ending with multiple abstract shots can be quite effective, the silence signifies the importance, a climax.

DISCLOSURE
Grab Her Interlude is music turning diegetic and outdo is real-life sound. Although the beginning could also count as diegetic as it sounds like the volume of music in the car, like Drive by Halsey would if I were to pick that. The 2013 All Around Ilkley past student also had this when putting the CD in the car

After watching this video I realised it is maybe more effective and more unconventional to briefly have the track playing diegetically from a stereo or something similiar as a diegetic interruption rather than right at the beginning introducing the song.

...

DIEGETIC BLIPS

Often we imagine music videos to only have the sound of the music.

These are examples of diegetic music being disruptingly added.

THE PRODIGY

Smack My Bitch Up:
Director Jonas Akerlund claims no one else was down that, artists didn't like their sound being tampered with, but in the same year earlier Anton Corbjin had already done something similar with It's No Good:

DEPECHE MODE

BEHIND THE WHEEL

actually no it's part of the audio of the single release version

IT'S NO GOOD

Maroon 5

...

...

REFERENCING THE LYRICS:

...

In this music video from Depeche Mode's 1997 album, Ultra, the band play cheesy 1970s-like rock stars.

It starts with a diegetic intro where the song title is referenced by director Anton Corbijn who makes a cameo (à la Hitchcock?) : "This is Depeche Mode, with ITS TOO GOOD." This is known as Antithesis.

It ends with Dave Gahan saying "It's No Good"

This was the first album following the departure of Alan Wilder which was followed by the attempted suicide and nearly fatal (he was declared dead for a minute) overdose of Dave Gahan, so this tongue-in-cheek comedic style was maybe something to show that they could parody and laugh about themselves, but also might be a brief departure from the ever darker directions their music had been going since they rebranded themselves in 1986.

THE SONG CAN BE TURNED ON:

Both these videos are started through putting the song with soundboxes or similar machines on after brief non-diegetic intros.

MADONNA

KRAFTKLUB

Turning on the vinyl.

....

KENDRICK LAMAR

In this video after a brief diegetic interlude the one carries on with being turned on again in a similar way to how the Sklave video was started.

HAVE THE TRACK HUNG UP ON THE END ON REPEAT:

Near the end of the video the sound is left on repeat, with a vinyl on repeat.

*Insert GIF of vinyl*

I worked with a vinyl on my AS coursework

I would have to edit the song to repeat towards the end.

Makes me think of the end track of Bowie's 1984-homage album Diamond Dogs

...

Unlike for example with Daft Punk's All Around The World video (something a past student video also did when using the track) where the track is already quieter at the beginning, I could edit the sound a bit fainter at the beginning, switching between loud and faint, as ifthere's an interruption like the door opening and closing in this video

...

OTHER TRACKS

The hip-hop rapper has used the technique in his videos to have other songs from the same album being played briefly, adding to the whole theme of a concept album.

In the Alright video For his 2015 album To Pimp A Butterfly he added the songs from u and a lyric from the second track For Free ("but this d**k en't free)

u

This track also had a music video for it.

...

...

David Bowie

THE STARS (ARE OUT TONIGHT)

This video starts from with a bonus track from the album, previewing it before it was released

HALLO SPACEBOY (PET SHOP BOY REMIX)

The first 10 seconds of the opening instrumental of the album is added on

Green Day

Green Day also did this, with the track Holiday being used.

Arctic Monkeys

...

Then you can also have songs from previous albums being used.

Galantis

Just like the song is introduced like a non-diegetic radio sound, before on the on the radio in the car their earlier single Runaway (U & I) (click here for music video) was played.

...

Queen

*Video with One Vision at the beginning*

Maroon 5

This video Maroon 5's first single This Love was sung, a non-diegetic sound.

*Still need to find video*

AT THE END

Halsey

The video ends with the opening tune of the (non-single) track Drive from the same album
